Scheduled for release on March 12, the PS5 Hyperpop Collection was introduced this week on the official PlayStation Blog. It consists of three forceful colour options: red, green, and blue, offered both as covers for the PS5 Slim and as matching DualSense controllers.

According to Leo Cardoso from the collection’s materials and finish team, these shades which are named Techno Red, Remix Green, and Rhythm Blue and take their cue from the glowing excess of RGB gaming rigs. This explanation is tidy and sufficient. Still, it does not quite match my own impression. To me, the colours recall the old PlayStation symbols, revived in brighter, almost electric form. The reference may be unintentional, but it works, and I find myself approving of it.

A More Intentional Design Language Than Before

In earlier console covers and DualSense controller releases, Sony’s approach rarely went beyond applying a bright color and allowing it to speak for itself. This time, the design team has taken a more deliberate step. As the PlayStation Blog images make clear, each variant is anchored by a black gradient that gradually gives way to the sharper neon tones, producing a contrast that is measured rather than merely loud.

This effect is most evident on the DualSense controllers, where the black extends across both the front and the rear, enclosing the color instead of surrendering to it. There is also the matter of the surface finish. Sae Kobayashi of the Hyperpop team notes that the glossy, lightly textured coating used on the console covers serves to heighten the brightness of the colors still further. The result is a level of visual emphasis that I had not expected, even after my first look at these unusually bold accessories.

PS5 Hyperpop Collection: Missed Opportunities and Pricing Realities

There is, however, a mild disappointment attached to all this color. Sony has chosen not to release a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro finished in these neon tones, which will frustrate anyone hoping to replace the console itself in 2026. This seems a missed opportunity. Had a Rhythm Blue Pro been available, I might have found myself unexpectedly ready to buy one. The accessories also carry a small increase in price, though this has become routine for items produced in limited runs and presented as special collections.

Pre-Order Dates, Prices, and Availability Details

For those who wish to brighten an existing setup rather than replace it, the option remains open. The Hyperpop console covers and DualSense controllers will go up for pre-order on January 16, priced at $74.99 / £64.99 for the covers and $84.99 / £74.99 for the controllers. They will be sold through the PS Direct online stores in the US and UK, as well as selected retailers, with orders opening at 10 a.m. local time.

Final Words

The PS5 Hyperpop Collection is the most adventurous move that Sony has made so far to pull the PS5 out of its monochrome comfort zone. Whether these neon offerings will be true design evolution or merely an expensive costume is a question of taste and pocket size. What is definite is that now anyone who is sick of looking at the PS5 with its constantly neutral face can be allowed to treat themselves to something more vibrant.

The lack of a corresponding console is like Sony playing it safe. Maybe they are waiting to see whether anyone will actually purchase these items before they give the green light to a Techno Red PS5 Pro that will either turn into a legend or become a nightmare on the clearance shelves by summer. Nevertheless, to those unburdened by financial limitations, pre-orders open January 16.
