Users of Instagram were recently urged to pay no attention to a series of unexpected password reset emails that appeared without any action on their part. A number of people reported receiving these messages repeatedly, sometimes several in a short span of time. Though unsolicited, the emails looked authentic and seemed to come from an official Instagram address.

What the Emails Claimed

Meta Confirms Technical Issue, Denies Any Account Breach

Speaking to nine.com.au, a company representative said that a technical flaw had allowed an outside party to trigger password reset emails for some users. The spokesperson stressed that Instagram’s systems had not been breached and that no accounts were placed at risk.

Users were told they could safely disregard the emails, and the company offered an apology for the confusion the incident had caused.

Early Speculation Links Incident to Possible Cyber Activity

At first, the appearance of these emails was attributed to what was described as a possible cyber incident, though no confirmation was offered at the time. The account was circulated by the cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes, which suggested that Instagram data had been taken in the latter part of 2024. 

According to this claim, attackers were able to gather information from roughly 17.5 million user profiles, extracting details such as usernames, addresses, phone numbers, and email contacts. On this basis, users were cautioned to disregard any password reset messages they had not asked for, and to refrain from following the links contained within them.

Instagram Explains How Password Reset Emails Can Be Triggered

Instagram, for its part, sought to lower the temperature. The company stated that the mere arrival of a password reset email should not be taken as proof that an account had been compromised. On its website, it explained that such messages can be triggered by error as easily as by intent: someone attempting to log in or change their own password may simply enter the wrong username or email address. 

Access to an account, Instagram emphasised, remains limited to those who already know the password or who actively click the login link in the message.

How Users Can Protect Their Accounts Going Forward

The Meta-owned platform also reminded users that its legitimate emails are sent only from the domain @mail.instagram.com. Those who remained uneasy were advised to take practical precautions, including changing their password and enabling two-factor authentication.
