The Redmi 17 5G is coming to India, although it will not be quite the same phone that appeared in overseas markets earlier this month. Xiaomi’s sub-brand has fixed September 3 as the Indian launch date and has already put up a microsite for the device. The page gives a clear view of the handset’s design and colours, while also disclosing some of the hardware and features that will define the Indian model.

The most noticeable change concerns the battery. The Indian Redmi 17 5G will have a larger battery than the version sold in global markets. There will be three colours to choose from, and the phone will be built around a Snapdragon 4-series chipset. Its display will measure 6.9 inches and will support a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

The launch date is no longer in doubt. Xiaomi’s Redmi 17 5G microsite has gone live in India and confirms that the phone will be officially introduced on September 3.

The new microsite gives a few more details about the Indian launch. The phone will go on sale through Amazon and will come in three colours: Absolutely Black, Endless Blue, and Eternal Orange. The Indian model will not look different from the version already sold in other markets. Xiaomi has kept the same basic design.

The hardware is more interesting. Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will power the Redmi 17 5G. The phone will also carry a 7,900mAh battery. That is larger than the 7,500mAh unit found in the global model. Xiaomi has also given the Indian version 45W wired fast charging.

It can charge other devices as well, using 22.5W wired reverse charging. The result is a phone that puts considerable emphasis on battery capacity and charging, rather than merely adding another specification to the list.

The Redmi 17 5G will have two cameras on the back. The main one will use a 50-megapixel sensor. Xiaomi has not yet said what the second camera will do. An LED flash will sit alongside the two lenses. For selfies and video calls, the phone will use an 8-megapixel front camera. It will sit in a small hole-punch cutout in the display.

The phone will also have a 6.9-inch flat screen with support for refresh rates of up to 120Hz. Xiaomi plans to disclose more information on September 2. The Redmi 17 5G first went on sale in selected global markets on August 10. In Malaysia, the starting price was MYR 769, or roughly Rs. 18,000.

That price covered the base model with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Indian phone will otherwise match the global version in its specifications and features. The battery is the main exception.

Final Words

The Redmi 17 5G is going to be a phone that really means it when it comes to battery life. The Indian variant has a 7,900mAh battery, 45W wired charging, and 22.5W reverse charging, which means it’s definitely geared towards making the users’ lives easier and more convenient by spending less time looking for a charger and more time using the phone.

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset, 6.9-inch 120Hz display and 50-megapixel main camera complete a package designed for those who value functionality over gimmicks. The September 3 launch will reveal the rest of the details that Xiaomi has yet to disclose, namely the price and the function of that second rear camera.
