Agrati’s Leading Role in Electrification

Agrati is a global leader in fastening solutions and a top provider for the automotive industry. It is an Italian family-run company with over eight decades of experience.

It has 12 production plants and more than 2000 employees. You can find their products in many industries.

Fastening solutions might seem like a field with few new developments. However, the company is actively engaged in research. This is why, besides automotive bolts, Agrati is at the forefront of innovation related to electric vehicles (EVs).

It’s no wonder, as the company develops more than 850 new products each year. Let’s look at what Agrati does for electric vehicles.

The Future of Mobility

Electrification is not a buzzword anymore. More EVs are being developed yearly. The world is shifting toward reducing fossil fuel usage. This might represent a threat to enterprises with a traditional mindset. Instead, Agrati was quick to recognize the enormous potential of this field and to take advantage of it.

This is why it has pushed the development of products custom-tailored for electrified vehicles. This doesn’t just include ingenious solutions in automotive bolts. It also means using special materials with electrical conductivity or insulation.

Thanks to its research efforts, Agrati offers a wide array of solutions that shape current and future EVs. These vehicles have intricate components in their electric powertrains. And the heart of the EV, the battery, is also unique in its requirements. The fact that Agrati offers solutions for both is proof of how the company adapts to the fast-changing industry.

Making the Heart of the EV Better

Agrati’s electrification-focused product lineup includes the use of special materials. These are engineered to meet the unique demands of electronic applications. The electrical conductivity capabilities of such materials are evidently required in EVs, but electrical insulation is also essential.

To tackle this, Agrati’s research team developed engineered plastics and cold-forged metal. They provide both insulation and ruggedness whenever they are required. Besides the materials themselves, the way they’re implemented is also an engineering feat.

Let’s take battery connections as an example. At the core of every electric vehicle lies a sophisticated battery system. Agrati has not overlooked the critical role of this vital component.

The battery terminals have a weldless connection, allowing for single-cell replacements and recycling instead of ditching the whole battery. Each electrical contact is controlled and mounted automatically. It also allows for ultra-fast charging. This shows the company’s commitment to pushing boundaries when it comes to battery technology.

Agrati is already a leader in securing the battery, but that doesn’t mean the company lacks ingenuity for EV-specific solutions. Long bolts and screws are manufactured with precision using dedicated cold-forging machines.

With a shank range of 100 to 600 mm, these fixations are tailored to meet the specific demands of electrified vehicles. They are made of steel and stainless steel to ensure durability and enhance safety.

Electric Powertrains Are Also Covered

Powertrains are basically what propel a vehicle. Internal combustion engines (ICE) have complex moving parts, including the engine, transmission, and emission systems. Electrified vehicles have a simpler powertrain instead.

It usually consists of a battery pack, traction inverters, the electric motor and reduction drive, and the on-board charger. As you can see, these components vary significantly from ICE vehicles. This is why Agrati committed resources for intensive research in this area.

And it paid off. Agrati fasteners for e-powertrains combine mechanical strength with insulating and conductive properties. For this latter purpose, unique materials are used, such as CuCrZr, a copper alloy with the addition of chrome and zirconium.

Special polymers are used for insulation properties. The fasteners have co-moulded parts with different geometries suitable throughout the powertrain.

Towards an Electric Future?

Whether EVs gain a significant foothold or ICEs prevail is a matter best left for analysts and future history. Still, Agrati is an incredible example of how a company doesn’t rest on its laurels.
