With the rising trend of ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft that offer an alternative to taxis, more and more innovative ways of commuting popped up and now the micromobility app became a thing.

What’s a micromobility app, you may ask? Well, basically it’s just another alternative to commuting in large cities by using electric bicycles or e-scooters. It’s genius when you actually think about it.

You no longer have to deal with traffic jams, or with the hassle of getting around by overcrowded buses, metros or trams, not to mention the fact that quite often you might have to switch them.

Now, you can just hop on an e-scooter, pay a small fee and whiz trough traffic like there’s no tomorrow, without worrying that you might turn up late for work.

How does it work?

It’s quite simple, basically like any other ride-sharing service. You open the app, locate a scooter/bike nearby, unlock it and off you go. After you’re done, you can either leave the scooter right at your destination or take it at a docking station.

It depends on what type of app you are using, whether it’s dockless or not. For example Lyft, and yes they got into the e-scooter business as well, does not offer a dockless service, whereas Lime does.

So, make sure to take that into consideration when you’re going on your commute.

Why is it so popular?

The micromobility app industry blew up lately. There are multiple reasons why this happened. For one, it solves many issues that large cities suffer from. Things such as pollution and congestion are some of the major problems big cities are plagued by.

As we’ve said before, e-scooters/e-bikes are a great way to deal with traffic jams. Alongside that, they’re electric so it’s environmentally friendly.

Secondly, by using these types of apps, you don’t have to buy an electric scooter, we all know that they can get quite pricey. You just rent it whenever you need it. It’s a win-win situation, both for you and for the company as well.

 Is it the future?

We’d say yes, however it might take long before cities around the world adopt this new method of transportation. Most of them don’t quite have the infrastructure developed to support such a thing.

So, having an e-scooter service in a town that does not have the proper infrastructure put together can be outright dangerous.

Conclusion

With all of those being said, the micromobility industry offers a great alternative to commuting, and now you can also have some fun while at it too. It does not only benefit people, the cities themselves have something to gain from it as well.

It helps reduce pollution and eases traffic. This industry has boomed over the past few years and I don’t see any way that it could fall down.
