In India, the iPhone has long occupied a curious position. It is a phone, certainly, but for many buyers it is also an expensive possession that carries a certain social value. The launch of the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro Max therefore brings back a familiar question for existing users: does the latest generation offer enough to justify an upgrade, or is the iPhone 17 Pro still the sensible choice?

The comparison becomes more interesting when the iPhone 18 Pro is placed directly against its predecessor. On paper, the two models have quite a lot in common. The newer model has a definite edge in terms of battery life. The iPhone 18 Pro  Max is said to be capable of up to 29 hours of playtime. The phone also has improved video endurance. This may be a helpful enhancement for those who spend extended periods of time viewing video or using their phone away from the charger.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro Price in India: Is the Upgrade Worth It? 

The 256GB iPhone 17 Pro costs ₹1,34,900 in India. The iPhone 18 Pro has the same storage at ₹1,64,900. That makes the newer model start at ₹30,000 more expensive. The 512GB iPhone 17 Pro costs ₹1,54,900, while the equivalent iPhone 18 Pro reaches ₹1,88,900. At 1TB, the prices stand at ₹1,74,900 and ₹2,39,900, respectively.

Apple is also bringing the iPhone 18 Pro to the market, which will feature 2TB of storage. The older phone is clearly more appealing to a first time Pro buyer. It introduces the A20 Pro chip and iOS 27. However, if you already have an iPhone 17 Pro, you’ll need to make a different calculation. 

The screen size and dimensions of the two phones remain the same. They are also on par with each other in terms of display resolution, and the rear camera features are quite similar. 

This means the iPhone 18 Pro is a pretty niche upgrade. For those who are looking for Apple’s latest chip, the latest software and extended battery life, it makes sense. It’s more difficult to justify when it’s a completely different phone they’re expecting. If so, then the iPhone 17 Pro has a lot to offer.

While the A20 Pro chip, extended battery life, and improvements to the front camera do provide a definite edge to the iPhone 18 Pro, that might not be enough to entice iPhone 17 Pro users to the nearest Apple Store. But it’s a different story for first-time Pro buyers. 

The iPhone 18 Pro features the latest hardware and software and offers additional storage space, but at a much higher cost. At ₹30,000 more for the entry-level 256GB model, the upgrade certainly isn’t pocket change. To sum up, the iPhone 18 Pro is the better phone, but not necessarily the better upgrade.
